Latest Northern California Fishing Reports

Weekly Updates from the Sacramento & Trinity River

Stay up to date with Fryes Fishing’s weekly fishing reports covering the most productive spots across the Sacramento River, Trinity River, Whiskeytown Lake, and surrounding Redding-area waters. Whether you're planning a striper fishing trip near Sacramento or looking for trout action on the Trinity, our fishing updates provide real-time insight into water conditions, fish behavior, and top-performing techniques.

Each fishing report is written by expert guide Jerry Frye, who shares firsthand experience from the riverbank and the boat. You'll learn which fly patterns are working, where the fish are holding, and what gear is producing bites. These reports are ideal for anglers targeting striped bass, salmon, and rainbow trout in both moving waters and still lakes like Whiskeytown.

We also include information about weather trends, water clarity, and seasonal fish migrations—vital details for planning a successful Northern California fishing trip. Our Sacramento River striper updates are especially helpful during spring and fall runs, while Trinity River trout reports shine during the peak fly fishing months.

Whether you're a seasoned local or visiting the Redding area for your next angling adventure, our fishing report page is a must-read. Fryes Fishing keeps you informed, prepared, and connected to the best fishing opportunities across Northern California's premier freshwater destinations.

Striper Bite Stays Strong on the Sacramento River fishing report coverpicture

May 2, 2025

Sacramento River - Contra Costa, CA Lake Report on 2nd May, 2025

Striped bass action is heating up on the Sacramento River as spring transitions into early summer. Anglers are seeing strong numbers of fish migrating upriver, especially around the Colusa, Verona, and Tisdale areas. Most stripers are ranging from 18 to 24 inches, with a solid mix of larger fish in the 10 to 20-pound class showing up daily. Live bait like minnows and pile worms are producing steady results, while artificial lures such as swimbaits, jerkbaits, and topwater plugs are generating aggressive strikes during early morning and late evening hours. Trolling deep-diving plugs has also been productive in the deeper channels. Water clarity is good, flows are steady, and conditions are lining up for continued excellent striper fishing throughout the month.

Sacramento River Lake Report on 28th Apr, 2024

Well I was summoned back to the Striper grounds in Colusa Ca. And they didn’t disappoint! Boats were constantly netting fish
We started trolling with lures dressed with K Brock white worms that had various colors of tails, red, floruresent green, pink n plain white. Had several good bites and lost a couple but landed big fish of day on a lure.
Lure bite stopped so we switched to minnows.
Using K-Brock brand new line of Rods with Lifetime Guarantee ( If you need a new rod this spring check them out)
First minnow dropped resulted in a nice 22” keeper.
Finished limited on minnows.
Nice big fish day.
Those fillets Were big,
Still booking days, pick Yours.
Message me to set up a date.

The Trout fishing on the Sacramento River has been awesome! We have been really successful in hooking into a good number of Rainbow Trout both on conventional tackle and using fly gear. If you have never experienced the excitement of fishing for rainbow trout in Northern California I highly recommend you give it a try! It does not get much better than this!

Sacramento River - Contra Costa, CA Lake Report on 16th Feb, 2023

The Sacramento River fishing has been excellent this week, and our customers have been having a great time on the water. Today, we are excited to report that our customers have been able to catch a good number of Sturgeon. The Sturgeon have been biting well in the deep waters of the Sacramento River. Our customers have been using a combination of live bait and lures to attract these fish, and they have been successful in catching them. The Sturgeon have been ranging in size from medium to large, with some measuring up to 6 feet long. Overall, Sacramento river fishing has been great, and we expect it to continue in the coming days. Our experienced guides will be happy to take you out on the water and help you catch some of these amazing fish.
